Vive Deluxe Audio Strap




After a huge delay regarding the gigantic customs problem that Venezuela is facing right now (among political, economic, and many other problems) fortunately the new hardware update has arrived, which I have been waiting for continue with my work. The "Vive Deluxe Audio Strap" is ergonomic support that surpasses the original version (which did not include audio), which offers great comfort for VR testing. This new rigid support is a huge improvement since it contributes to the counterweight of the headset, making it much easier to put it on and take it off, that repeatedly was a really exhausting task.

Samsung Gear VR Controller




It's hard to objectively explain how excited to feel about being able to access VR content designed for Smartphones, and to be able to feel, visualize and interact with it as if were content designed for High-end Computer + HMD; this and more offers the new Gear VR control, making primitive the traditional selection method. This is a huge step towards in user comfort since it involves to forget the selection methods directly from the headset, so having to execute tasks that are supposed to be simple (like typing) and had become a headache (specifically neck-pain). The GearVR Controller operation remembers HTC Vive control systems, and its use is much more simplified, which means that from now on it is possible to develop interactive content much more efficient, and to be able to offer a more comfortable user experience.

Honestly I think that the new Gear VR controller offers the perfect complement to any interactive experience for Virtual Reality, and also its smartphone link and operation is very simple which facilitates access to any type of user; but I'm sure that it will not replace the traditional game controllers (like "Stratus XL") whose design, use and function are widespread in the video game market and the younger population. From the VR developer point of view, this new control means a huge step forward to the Gear VR as a system, and facilitates the possibility to make developments for both High-end and Phone-based systems, which means a priceless contribution in this uncharted territory.

Cold-Cathode Lighting




After some previous experiences with LED lights on my desktop computer (which unfortunately didn't last long), I decided to go a bit further in the search for a more attractive aesthetic for my case Cooler Master Cosmos SE without having to intervene too much, nor that implies a greater effort to modify the original design.

After make the respective research, I found some pretty interesting models, ranging from Sound Activated lighting systems, others that emit UV light, to another very attractive called "Liquid Neon" like the Plasma lamps using technology discovered by Nikola Tesla.

In my particular case I decided to try this type of lighting to appreciate the kind of light wavelength of these cathodes (and I chose the basic model that had the most positive reviews), so I installed a brand LOGISYS Computer, Model CLK15BL 15" which I found quite cheaper.

I honestly "fell in love" with this kind of light, since it is not too strong to disturb sight or weak enough not to be seen; and so far I can recommend its use widely, since it's a type of light that does not generate much heat inside the case, can be easily installed, and offers a really attractive aesthetic.

SUPERPOSITION Benchmark - NVIDIA GTX 1080 Founders Edition



Unigine released a new graphics benchmark test based on the Unigine 2 graphics engine. The Superposition benchmark evaluates your GPU's physically based rendering performance on displays up to 8K, as well as VR headsets. This benchmark can be effectively used to determine the stability of PC hardware under extremely stressful conditions, as well as check the cooling system's potential under maximum heat output. Unigine allows you to run the benchmark in several performance modes ranging from Low Quality upwards to Ultra, Extreme and even more complex settings. Also a custom benchmark run can be created with a limited number of settings and resolutions. Unigine is compatible with the DirectX 11 and/or OpenGL 4.5 APIs.



The Unigine Superposition Benchmark comes in three different editions: The Basic edition is free for personal use and it allows you to define custom settings, monitor your GPU, and play with the interactive demo. The Advanced edition give you access to the leaderboards, the VR experience, and the looped stress test. The advanced version is for overclockers and VR users. The Professional Edition for commercial use, includes everything the advanced version does and adds advanced features such as command line automation, exportable reports, per-frame deep analysis, and technical support. 


You can download the free version of the Superposition benchmark from the Unigine website, but If you want the Advanced (VR) or Pro version, you must purchase it from the website and upgrade the software.

Performance Test:

The Superposition test runs through 17 scenes and measures performance for each one. At the end of the test, it spits out a results page with minimum, average, and maximum FPS numbers; minimum and maximum GPU temperatures; and maximum GPU usages. You also get an overall score, which you can compare online against other people’s scores. The performance benchmark page lets you select from several presets, including 720p low; 1080p medium, high, and extreme; 4K optimized; and 8K optimized. You can also define custom parameters, including resolution, texture quality, and shader quality.


VR Ready Test:

Unigine also included a test that evaluates your PC’s VR performance. The "VR Ready?" test features configurations for HTC Vive and Oculus Rift headsets, as well as multiple graphics quality presets. When you select HTC Vive from the VR Headset drop-down menu, the software sets the resolution output to 1512 x 1680. When you select Oculus Rift from the list, the resolution preset is 1332 x 1586. The benchmark also has an option to configure a custom resolution to test for theoretical performance on future headsets. 

Stress Test:

The advanced version of the Superposition benchmark also includes a stress test option, which lets you run the benchmark in a loop for a specified amount of time. The stress test doesn’t include the preset configurations from the performance tests, but you can define the resolution, including ultrawide displays, texture quality, graphics API, as well as whether the test runs in fullscreen, windowed, or in a borderless window. 


Game Mode:

The Unigine Superposition benchmark also includes a game mode, which puts you into the lab environment from the performance test and lets you interact with many of the highly-detailed objects in the room. The advanced version of the benchmark also includes a VR version of the game that lets you visit the virtual environment first hand. 


Personal Results:

It's worth to mention that I ran the tests on several occasions, including a Windows 7 operative system optimization (turned off resident applications, disabling Windows Aero and connecting a single monitor), and despite the fact that there is a considerable difference between the performance of DirectX on Windows 7 compared to Windows 10, it could confirmed major differences in better results.

I made the video recording of the cameras animation sequence (cinematics) in order to confirm the assets development and visualize the polygons amount in the scene. In the following video you can see the topology of the 3D models developed by UNIGINE, as well as confirm the visualization sequence of each shot made by the SUPERPOSITION benchmark.



This video is a demonstration and irrefutable proof of a correct and proper development for Real-time Visualization and Virtual Reality that every developer should see.
